Why "how much tax" isn't a single number

The percentage of your salary that goes to tax climbs as your salary climbs — not linearly, but in steps tied to the bracket table. Two people earning ₱30,000 and ₱60,000 a month don't just pay proportionally more tax at the higher salary; the person earning ₱60,000 pays a meaningfully higher percentage of their income in tax, because more of that income sits in higher brackets. The comparison table above makes that curve visible instead of abstract.

For the policy behind these brackets, read TRAIN Law Explained.

Salary tax calculator FAQ

What is 'effective tax rate' and how is it different from my tax bracket?

Your tax bracket (marginal rate) is the rate applied to your next peso of income. Your effective tax rate is your total annual tax divided by your total annual income — always lower than your marginal rate under a graduated system, since only the portion of income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.

Why does the comparison table show different rates at each salary level?

Because the first ₱250,000 of annual taxable income is tax-free regardless of salary, that fixed exemption matters proportionally more at lower salaries — so effective rates rise as gross salary rises, even though everyone gets the same tax-free floor.

Does this calculator use my exact contributions?

The comparison table uses standard contribution estimates (SSS per the current schedule, roughly 2.5% PhilHealth and up to 2% Pag-IBIG) to keep the comparison consistent across salary levels — your own numbers may differ slightly. Use the salary calculator for your own exact SSS/PhilHealth/Pag-IBIG figures.
